OpenAI Kills AI Model Choice — GPT-5 Now Decides for You
OpenAI's forced upgrade to GPT5 caused ripples through its installed base of loyal users
Until last Thursday, ChatGPT users could choose between fast-response AI models such as GPT-4o or slower but more analytical “thinking” models like o3.
With the release of GPT-5, these options were eliminated; the AI—rather than the user—now determines which model to use. This change has drawn backlash from customers, both for individual prompts and for GPTs built with a specific model.
Upgrading “digital intelligence”—the underlying AI models and the routing between them—can directly affect the accuracy of outputs and the logic of software. This is fundamentally different from a traditional software feature upgrade for a SaaS product such as Salesforce CRM, HubSpot, or NetSuite.

Memo: at time of writing, ChatGPT 4o is now an option in Microsoft M365 Copilot Chat but not OpenAI ChatGPT Teams.
